Oil analysis for classic vehicles
Precise engine evaluation through tribological testing
Discover how a comprehensive oil analysis can objectively assess the condition of your classic car and prevent future damage.
Why analyse oil for classic cars?
Oil analysis is a crucial tool for assessing the technical condition of engines in classic vehicles. By analysing the oil composition, we can detect wear and potential damage at an early stage before it becomes visible. This is particularly important for collector's vehicles, where maintaining the original condition is of paramount importance. The analysis provides valuable insights that can help with purchase decisions or the evaluation of the vehicle's history.
What is an oil analysis - and why is it so valuable?
With the tribological investigation (oil analysis), a fresh oil sample is taken - for example from the engine, transmission or differential.
This sample is analysed in the laboratory for the following characteristics:
-
Metal abrasion (e.g. iron, aluminium, copper)
-
Wear particles
-
Combustion residues
-
Fuel or cooling water entry
-
Ageing of the oil (additive condition)
-
Contamination due to dirt or abrasion
This data gives us clear information:
-
Running performance behaviour
-
Lubricant film break-off
-
Bearing damage
-
Leaks
-
Overheating or overloading
-
Condition of pistons, cylinders, bearings & turbocharger
In short: Oil does not lie.
The process of analysing oil
Step 1
The tribological analysis begins with taking a small oil sample from the engine. This sample is then analysed in our laboratory to determine the chemical composition.
Step 2
We use state-of-the-art technologies to identify wear metals, contaminants and additives in the oil. This data provides information about the internal condition of the engine.
Step 3
Finally, we prepare a detailed report summarising the results of the analysis and making recommendations for maintenance or repairs. This report is a valuable tool for collectors and investors.
When is an oil analysis useful?
An oil analysis is particularly useful in several situations. When buying a classic vehicle, it can provide information about the actual condition of the engine even before visible damage occurs. It is also beneficial when selling, as it gives potential buyers confidence in the vehicle's history and maintenance condition. If the vehicle history is unclear, the analysis enables an objective assessment of the engine, which is particularly invaluable for classic cars.
Furthermore, an oil analysis is also useful for regular maintenance intervals in order to recognise wear at an early stage and avoid expensive repairs. For collectors and investors, it offers additional security that the vehicle is kept in optimum condition, which preserves the value of the vehicle in the long term.
Oil analysis is particularly suitable for
-
Classic car with an unclear history
-
Classics with a rare or expensive engine
-
Vehicles before purchase or sale
-
Long-term stationary vehicles without documented maintenance
-
Racing or prototype vehicles with high thermal loads
At Kukuk, we regularly carry out oil analyses as part of our Originality checks, Valuation report and technical analyses often in combination with 3D scanning, spectroscopy or endoscopy.
How does an oil analysis work at Kukuk?
-
Taking the oil sample under controlled conditions (e.g. with a warm engine)
-
Analysis in an accredited laboratory with methods such as XRF or ICP-OES
-
Evaluation by our engineering team taking into account engine construction, mileage and vehicle type
-
Interpretation in context - So not just "measured value = high", but: What does this mean for this vehicle?
The result: A technical finding with substance - comprehensible, objective, documented in writing.
Relevance of oil analysis for classic cars
Why is oil analysis important for collector's vehicles?
With classic vehicles, access to engine data is often restricted. Missing control units, tampered speedometers or restorations without documentation make it difficult to make real statements about the technical condition.
In such cases, the oil analysis is an indispensable means of preventing damage and preserving value. It shows whether friction, overheating or wear processes are already running in the engine - and long before they become noticeable or visible.
